Tenure-Track Assistant Professor East Asian Religion and Culture

The Department of Religion and Culture at The University of Winnipeg invites applications for a tenure-track position in East Asian Religion and Culture at the Assistant Professor rank, commencing July 1, 2017, subject to final budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an active research and publication agenda and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The area of specialization is open to any aspect or geographical area of East Asian religions, as well as any historical period. We seek candidates with broad backgrounds and interests who are able to teach a wide range of courses on East Asian religions in their cultural contexts. The successful candidate will teach courses such as Women in Asian Religions, Buddhist Traditions in East Asia, and Topics in Asian Religions, with an opportunity to develop new courses in their area of expertise.

The position is a pivotal point of intersection between Religion and Culture and the Department’s East Asian Languages and Cultures program—most courses are cross-listed and the successful candidate will support both degree-granting programs.

The successful candidate will share in the administrative responsibilities of the Department and play an active role in the advising and supervision of students.

Applicants will typically have completed their Ph.D. by the time of appointment. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter (outlining the candidate’s suitability for the position, as well as research and teaching interests), a statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching proficiency and a representative writing sample (i.e. a publication or dissertation chapter). Applicants should arrange for this material and three confidential letters of reference to be submitted electronically in PDF format to Rachel Berg, administrative assistant for the Department of Religion and Culture: Questions should be directed to Dr. Mark Ruml Departmental Personnel Committee Chair at:

Review of applications will begin October 31, 2016, and continue until the position is filled.
