« Doing Fieldwork in North Korea », 28 novembre 2018
Christopher Green (LIAS/International Crisis Group) in conversation with Valérie Gelézeau (EHESS), Elisabeth Chabanol (EFEO) and Koen De Ceuster (LIAS)
What are the challenges one faces as a researcher trying to do fieldwork in a closed and contained environment as North Korea? Is there merit in pursuing fieldwork despite the imposed restrictions on access to the terrain? How does restricted access impact research findings and how does one account for them? These and other questions will be touched upon by Valérie Gelézeau (EHESS), Elisabeth Chabanol (EFEO) and Koen De Ceuster (LIAS), who are currently collaborating in a joint research project City, Architecture and Urbanism in North Korea, funded by the French National Research Agency ANR (ANR-17-CE27-0012). All three of them have longstanding and ongoing individual research projects in North Korea, in the field of urban studies, art and art history, archaeology and heritage.
The discussion will be moderated by Christopher Green (LIAS), senior advisor, Korea Peninsula, International Crisis Group.
